It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of the Moroccan sociologist and feminist, Fatema Mernissi, on the 30th of November.

In addition to her rôle as professor of sociology at the University of Rabat, Fatema Mernissi was also a militant defender of human rights and democracy who affected whole generation of Moroccan intellectuals.

In 2003, she shared the Spanish Prince of Asturias prize with the American author Susan Sontag.
